 1. I updated my OS from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11/10.5(Leopard), and now my keyboard doesn't work.

First you will need to uninstall your current driver. Then you will need to go to our driver page and download the current driver, which is Version 1.2 and install the new driver on your computer.

2. I have a problem with my keyboard that isn't listed here. What should I do?

First, try these troubleshooting procedures to solve your problem:

  1. Confirm that you have the latest driver installed.

Check our driver page to see if there is a more recent driver for your keyboard. If there is, uninstall your current driver using the uninstall program that came with your driver. This will be a file that is included in the driver .dmg file you downloaded. Next, go to our driver page, download and install the latest driver for your keyboard.

  1. Make sure the keyboard is plugged directly into the computer.

The keyboard should be directly plugged into the computer’s USB slot, and not into a hub, monitor, USB extender cable, KVM switch, or PS/2 adapter.

  1. Remove excess USB devices.

Remove all USB devices except your keyboard and a mouse.

  1. Check your JSM Settings application.

Open the JSM Settings application. This will be in your Applications folder. Once the application is open, move your jog/shuttle wheel and see if the action is mimicked on screen.

  1. Test your keyboard with another computer.

Install your keyboard on another computer and see if you are still having the same problem.

3. On my Mac, I have installed the driver and keyboard and everything works fine, yet when another user logs in under their username, the jog/shuttle doesn't work.

You will need to install our driver for each user on the system. Please also note that we do not support "fast user switching."

4. My F9, F10 and F11 keys move my windows around instead of performing their labeled functions - what's going on and how do I fix it?

Go to the System Preferences panel, click on 'Dashboard & Exposé', and check the 'Keyboard & Mouse Shortcuts' section (bottom half of the screen): make sure that the drop-down boxes next to "All Windows," "Application Windows" and "Desktop" do not have F9, F10 and F11 displayed. If F9, F10 and F11 are displayed, change the drop-down selector to be blank (which displays "-" a dash character) or another key that doesn't conflict with your application.

5. In Final Cut Pro, my Shuttle Wheel opens the volume slider and changes windows when I turn it, instead of controlling the timeline. How can I fix this?

There are a group of Mac default keyboard shortcuts which may interfere with the Shuttle Wheel shortcuts. Open your System Preferences, then go to the 'Keyboard & Mouse' icon and the 'Keyboard Shortcuts' tab. Scroll down the list until you see a group named 'Keyboard Navigation'. Uncheck the check box next to this name in order to turn off the entire group. Your Shuttle will now function normally in Final Cut Pro.

6. I've downloaded and placed the International Symbols file in the Keyboard Layouts folder, however I still can't type International Symbols.

Go to your System Preferences, then click on the International icon. Click on the Input Menu section, and scroll down the list until you see the US - International option. Click the check box next to this and then click the option "Use One Input Source in All Documents" and "Show Input Menu in Menu Bar" below this. Restart your computer.

When the computer restarts, in the upper right hand corner of the screen, next to the clock, you should see an icon of an American flag, with little black lines above it. This will mean that the International Layout is active.

7. Do I need to start the JSM Settings application every time I want to use the jog/shuttle or multimedia keys?

No, if the software has been installed properly, the application will start when you turn on the computer and will run in the background without you having to do anything. The only time that you would need to go into the JSM Settings would be to customize a preset or create a new preset.

8. The "Option" and "Command" keys to the left of the spacebar are not where I am used to them on my Bella keyboard - is there a way to change this?

There are several simple steps to follow to perform this change in OSX:

1. Open your 'System Preferences', go to the 'Keyboard & Mouse Icon', then click on the 'Keyboard' tab.

2. Click on the button labeled 'Modifier Keys'.

3. Click on the drop-down menu next to "Option Key" and select "Command".

4. Click on the drop-down menu next to "Command Key" and select "Option". Click OK.

Disclaimer: Any damage to the keyboard or keycaps as a result of the following instructions is the sole responsibility of the owner and is not covered under our warranty.

5. To change the physical placement of the keys on the keyboard, simply use a thin metal object (a small screwdriver should work) to gently pry the keycaps off, then snap the keys into the new position.

If you would like to reverse these changes, return to the 'Modifier Keys' section in the System Preferences 'Keyboard & Mouse' section and click the "Restore Defaults" button.

9. On my Mac keyboard I have noticed there are green lights for Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock, but the only one I can get to light is the Caps Lock light - is my keyboard defective?

Macs do not support Num Lock and Scroll Lock functions, therefore those lights will not work on your Mac.

10. When I go into the JSM Settings application, the Applications window always highlights "Global Settings" rather than the application I am in. Why isn't my application highlighted in the window?

The Applications window is not an indication of the currently running application. "Global Settings" is shown by default whenever the JSM Settings application is opened.

To edit the preset for a particular application, select that application in the Applications window. The JSM Settings presets are application specific, meaning that as you switch from one application to another it will automatically load the presets for that application. If there is no preset created for an application then the Global Settings will become the active setting.

11. My DV Keyboard is functioning properly but I want the Jog and Shuttle to control my tape machines and/or camera, can I set this up?

The Bella jog shuttle controller, in combination with the JSM driver software, produces commands based upon a particular active application, such as Final Cut Pro. While an application is active (in the foreground), the JSM driver applies settings designed specifically for that application, and will automatically switch or load different settings when you switch to another application. While we can determine if a particular application is active, we are not able to determine a mode or window that may be active within the application.

If an application is not consistent with commands used to vary the speed of a clip in a timeline, source/record window and capture mode, then our jog shuttle may not work in all modes. By default, we program the setting of our JSM driver to work controlling clips in the timeline and source/record windows, as this is typically where most editors spend most of their time.

If, for example, the timeline and source/record windows use F-keys to control playback speeds but the capture mode does not, the jog shuttle will not work during capture. This happens to be the case in Final Cut Pro, as the capture mode does not utilize F-Key commands and only recognizes JKL keystrokes. If you want to be able to use the jog/shuttle in all windows within Final Cut Pro, the only option is to use a JSM setting that utilizes only the JKL keyboard commands and not the F-Keys; you can get this setting by clicking here. Please keep in mind that with this setting you will be losing the finer increments of speed control that the F-Keys provide.

12. The multimedia keys on my DV or Pro Series keyboard have buttons for Play/Pause, Stop, Rewind, and Fast Forward, but when I push these buttons my audio software opens. Can I make these keys control my editing software?

These keys can be setup to control a variety of functions including keystroke emulation while using specific applications. This can be achieved by opening the JSM Settings application, and selecting the appropriate program from the Applications window on the left side of the interface. Then click on the Multimedia Keys tab and push the Play/Pause Multimedia button on the keyboard. On the right side of the interface you will see several options. Select "Keystroke" and enter the corresponding keystroke you would like to use for that button in your editing software. Repeat this for each of the "playback" Multimedia Keys. Once you are finished click on Apply, then OK.

13. I have purchased a DV Keyboard for Audio Editing but when I use the Jog and Shuttle I don’t hear any sound during timeline navigation, is something wrong with my keyboard?

No, the keyboard is working properly. The scrub function is determined by the audio editing software manufacturer and most audio based programs have not included an analog scrub feature. The settings that are written for your audio software are to the best functioning ability, but updated settings may be available on our Settings page.

14. I have purchased a DV Keyboard and I did not receive a User Guide or manual in the box, where can I get one?

The User Guide is included with the driver you’ve downloaded from our website (here). The file is a Portable Document File (pdf) and will require that you have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer, if you don’t have Acrobat you can download it from the Adobe web site: www.Adobe.com/Acrobat. Our user guide can be accessed from the Help drop down menu at the top of the screen when the JSM Settings application is open. Once you open the manual you can print it or view it on your computer.

15. I installed the driver from the factory CD. After installation, I tried to use the software and received an error. What do I do?

You have installed a driver from our old installation CD. Go to 'Applications' and drag 'DVKeyboard' into the Trash. Then go to our drivers page and download the latest driver for your keyboard.

16. How do I change a setting to work with an earlier version of my NLE software?

In order to change the Target Application for a setting, first make sure the proper setting is highlighted in the Applications window in your JSM Settings program. From the 'File' menu choose "Change Target Application". This will open a window into your "Applications" folder. Navigate to the folder that contains the application you want to change the setting to, find that application's main file, and click on it then click 'Open'. This setting will now work when the chosen application is running in the foreground.

17. How do I access the International Symbols on my DVKeyboard 3.0, Pro Series 3.0, or Advantage Series 2.0 keyboard?

Download the "U.S. - International" keyboard layout from the Drivers page.

This is freeware written by Rainer Brockerhoff (brockerhoff.net). Follow the directions file labeled "About this Keyboard Layout," included in the download.

You can now access the International Symbols labeled on the front of the keys by pressing the right Alt key (Alt Gr) and the appropriate key, or Alt Gr and the Shift key in addition to the appropriate key.

18. I have a Mac Pro and I am unable to eject my secondary optical drive. What do I do?

To eject your secondary optical drive, hold the Option key and press F12.

19. How do I reprogram the Multimedia Keys on my Advantage Series 2.0 keyboard?

The Multimedia Keys on the Advantage Series 2.0 keyboards are permanently programmed to a common set of programs and commands. This includes opening My Computer, the Microsoft Calculator program, your default Email program, your default Web Browser, adjusting your computer’s volume, and ejecting media from your CD/DVD drive.

20. I used to be able to turn on and shut off my Mac with your keyboard, now it will only shut the computer off - what happened?

In the newer versions of the Mac OS, Apple no longer supports starting the computer via the keyboard, so your keyboard can only shut the computer off.

21. My eject key is no longer working - is my keyboard defective?

Macintosh has changed some of there programming so that in OS X the eject function is now performed by pushing F12: you must hold it down for about two to three seconds for the function to work.

For further help on programming an eject key, see the next question.

22. I recently purchased a new Mac, and noticed there is no button on the front of the computer to eject a CD or DVD. I have tried the multi-media eject button on my EZ Keyboard, but it will not open the tray. What can I do?

First, there are four methods by which you can open the CD/DVD tray:

  1. Use the Eject key.
  2. Use the Eject portion of the Control Strip.
  3. Use the Eject application
  4. Use the F12 Key.

In order for the Eject key to work on your EZ Keyboard, you must have installed the latest drivers from our website (here). For iMedia Keyboards, see below.

The Eject application, Eject Control Strip and "About The The eject application, Eject Control Strip and "Eject Extras" document are located in the Eject Extras folder located in the Apple Extras folder (in the Applications folder). The "About Eject Extras" document provides detailed instructions on using the Eject application and the Eject Control strip. If the Eject Extras folder is not located on the internal drive you can download it through this link:

> Download Eject Extras (EjectExtras.sit 8kb)

Once you have unstuffed and installed the program a shortcut will be placed on your desktop, and any of the multimedia keys at the top of your EZ Keyboard can be programmed to open Eject Extras. Open the driver control panel and click the Multimedia Keys tab, push down the multimedia key that you want to perform eject and click on button action, select open item from the list and browse to the desktop and select the Eject Extras Icon and click OK. Now you can eject from the keyboard.

In Mac OS X 10.1 and beyond, the F12 ejects optical media or opens and closes the tray of an optical drive. While this provides functionality for keyboards that do not have a dedicated Eject key, Apple is aware that this behavior can be an issue in some situations.

When working within an application, you can bypass the eject feature by holding the option key while you press F12. Alternatively, you may use menu items where applicable in affected applications (instead of the F12 key). Some applications allow you to remap the function keys.

23. My Function keys don’t work properly with my EZ Keyboard – I get an Apple dialog box whenever I push any of the Function keys. Is my keyboard defective?

First, there is nothing wrong with your EZ Keyboard Product – this is a function of the Mac O/S. To correct the situation, you want to make sure that your Function keys are not assigned to any other Mac OS function. Go to the Apple pull down menu in the upper left hand corner of the screen and go down to "Control Panels." Go to Keyboard. A new window opens. Make sure that nothing is assigned to the function keys in the layout. If there are keys that are assigned to a program, have them cleared by highlighting them and clicking clear. Next, there is a checkbox for using the F1-F15 keys as hot function keys. This check box should be checked, if is not already. Close the window, and open up your program again, and the function keys should work now. In rare instances, we have seen that if the Function checkbox is already checked, and the keys still don’t work - go back through and uncheck the Function checkbox - in some instances this has been known to work.

24. My Classic Series keyboard doesn’t type properly or two keys are transposed.

There are several possible causes of this situation. Below are some checks you can perform:

  1. Make sure the keyboard is connected directly to the Mac - do not plug the keyboard into a USB hub.

  2. Check the version number of the HID Library and USB Device Driver in the Extensions Manager: they should be version 1.4.1 or above. If you have older drivers, you will need to update your Mac O/S to get the latest versions.

  3. Zap your P-RAM - this can be done by restarting the computer, then holding down the Command, Option, P and R keys simultaneously; the computer will continue to boot, then chime, and re-start again. Allow this to happen seven (7) times, then release the keys and let the computer boot normally.

  4. Test to confirm that the keyboard is working properly. Go to the Apple pull down menu in the upper left hand corner of the screen and go down to "Keycaps." A new window opens with a graphic of the keyboard. From here, you should be able to type all the keys and get their respective letter or number at the cursor. If there is a problem here with keys being transposed, call or email us and we will issue an RMA.

  5. Check your EZ Keyboard serial number. If you have our "Classic" USB keyboard (iKey4 from Macally) the serial number should end with "V3" - if it does not, and you have performed the checks above, call or email us and we will issue an RMA (provided you are within your one-year warranty period). Please note that all iMedia EZ Keyboards have always shipped with the V3 chip installed, so there is no "V3" at the end of the serial number.

25. My Classic Series keyboard doesn’t type. The mouse works, but the keyboard doesn’t.

There are several possible causes of this situation. Below are some checks you can perform:

1. This may be due to an extension conflict. To confirm this, restart and boot up with extensions off, (holding down the shift key). With the extensions off, open Simple Text, and see if the keyboard types. If the keyboard does, there is an extension conflict. This extension conflict may be due to an Iomega Extension. Please check for any Iomega extensions, and try turning them off, and then rebooting (with extensions). If the keyboard doesn’t work with the Iomega extensions off, then there may be another extension conflict elsewhere.

2. Do the five checks described above under "My keyboard doesn’t type properly - two keys are transposed."
